First, as a pharmacy where locals could get both holistic and modern remedies, and then later, after being purchased by pharmacist and current owner, Abdul Qaiyum, expanded into a quality source of all-encompassing holistic products for health, wellness, and beauty. What we love most about Merz is their continued dedication to curating the most quality, holistic products that can be found in the world that enhance people's health and lifestyles inside and out. I first met Anthony Qaiyum, Abdul's son, in August 2013 during a trade show, and then Abdul in January of this year at the NY NOW trade show at the Javits, I was impressed by their knowledge on natural medicine and beauty, but what resonated most with me was that they are a truly family-run business, just like us. All members of their family are involved in the business in some way or another, and they perpetuate that familial vibe and warmth to their customers and the community they serve. We're really excited to be a part of the Merz family, and we encourage those of you who live in the Chicago area to visit one of their two stores, as well as their extensive apothecary website, http://www.smallflower.com/, where you can buy Nomaterra products as well. Ingredient Spotlight: Malibu Honeysuckle Posted on 27 Aug 15:00 , 0 comments

Photo (23)A number of different species of honeysuckle grow indigenously throughout Southern California. While the flower gives off a sweet, tantalizing aroma and the nectar can be consumed, its berries are poisonous to humans, yet not to other animals. Because of its sweet nature, it is used to lure songbirds and butterflies into a garden to add to its beauty. The honeysuckle is used holistically to treat fevers, inflammation, and skin infections, as well as for its calming properties. Fun Fact: Honeysuckle can be found in cat toys as the smell attracts them. Because of its sweet nature, honeysuckle is also used to lure songbirds and butterflies into a garden. Nomaterra Fragrances is back in their Capitol Hill location for this weekend! Visit us from Fri-Sun 10-7 pm.[/caption] Nomaterra Fragrances is back in our Capitol Hill Pop-Up location this weekend (731 8th St SE, Washington, DC 20003), Friday through Sunday (Nov. 22 - 24) from 10 am - 7 pm. Come try out our newest scents--Malibu Honeysuckle, Oahu Gardenia, Boston Tobacco Leaf, and Savannah Magnolia. We will also have our hand-poured soy candles on sale, as well as a very special, all-natural, all-organic fragrance created exclusively for the holidays, titled, Beimeni. Beimeni is based on the mythical island of Beimeni, and legend has it that the fountain of youth could be found there, as well as riches that inspired prosperity. Our Beimeni uses notes of narcotic Egyptian Jasmine, Egyptian Rose, and the very rare East Indian Sandalwood. We will be making it fresh, on-the-spot for you. Looking forward to seeing familiar and new faces this weekend!

Ingredient Spotlight: Violet Leaf Posted on 25 Oct 15:07 , 0 comments

Ingredient Spotlight: Violet Leaf For those of you who live in or around Brooklyn, have you ever noticed these leaves peeking through concrete slabs on the sidewalks or in parks? These are violet leaves, and we actually use the natural violet leaf absolute in our exclusive Brooklyn fragrance. You're probably wondering how we ever found a plant or flower to represent Brooklyn. Coastal violets and violet leaves are historically native to Brooklyn's marshland coasts. And with our impending store opening in Brooklyn, what better time than to spotlight the ever-present yet often ignored violet leaf. Violet leaf smells nothing like violets, the flowers, but adds this metallic coolness and earthy fresh cut-grass feel to a fragrance. I actually found it rather complex to work with, as it can be very overpowering and can destroy an entire fragrance if not diluted properly. We used it to create our first Nomaterra Cologne called Brooklyn Violet Leaf, which will be exclusive only to our store (you won't even find it on our website). We're OBSESSED with this scent—especially when it's worn on our men! Come check us out and try our Brooklyn Cologne and our other scents at The Shops at Kent, 240 Kent Ave., Brooklyn, NY 11249!)

DC at Night Posted on 23 Oct 14:40 , 0 comments

DC at Night

A recent trip to DC for the Nomaterra Pop-Up Shop in Capitol Hill lead to a spontaneous late night drive. We visiting some of the Capitol's most grand monuments, which resulted in these "dc in the dark" photos (taken with an iphone nonetheless). In the middle sits our DC Cherry Blossom unisex fragrance, that is ideal for night—notes like musk, vanilla, black pepper, tobacco, and citrus make this an incredibly sexy scent for a night out on the Capitol town. The travel spray comes with a replacement unit, and is priced at $86.00, available to buy on www.nomaterra.com

Nomaterra Artist Spotlight: Marta Solomianko Posted on 18 Oct 13:12 , 0 comments

Nomaterra Artist Spotlight: Marta Solomianko Nomaterra is revealing a brand new emblem, a compass-inspired circular logo, representing the Nomaterra ideology of creating luxury scents for the travel inspired, using ingredients indigenous and authentic to each location. The artist behind the emblem is San Francisco based Marta Solomianko, who also created the East Hampton, Miami, and Malibu paintings that you see on our new roll-on and candle packaging. Our task at hand was to marry the authenticity of the city-scents inside the box, with artwork representing the locations themselves, to create a cohesive movement from packaging to scent. Above you see our emblem, as well as a some of Marta's initial paintings, color work, and sketches that lead to the final artwork we have now. Marta is an abstract artist, and extremely talented in what she does. She recently exhibited at La Porte Peinte Centre Pour Les Arts in Noyers, France and travels the world exhibiting her installations and artwork at renowned galleries. I would highly suggest to check out her work on http://www.martasolomianko.com, and if you're looking to have artwork or graphic design done for a current or future project of yours, reach out to Marta at mksolomia@gmail.com.
